Opisthoteuthis bruuni
Richard E. Young and Michael VecchioneIntroduction
This species is known only from 16 juveniles (13-29 mm ML) taken in a single tow off Chile (Voss, 1982). It has not been reported since.
Characteristics
- Arms, web and suckers - Thickened web present on ventral side of each arm near web margin.
- Web extends further on dorsal side of arms.
- Web formula inconsistent.
- Arms subequal.
- 27-35 suckers on each arm I, number increases with size.
- Male arm: small row of small suckers around mouth, following 2-3 suckers increase in size, then 3 gigantic suckers, then small to about sucker 17 (near web margin) where 3-4 suckers somewhat enlarged, distally 7-8 suckers gradually decrease in size to tip.
- Female arm: Sucker size gradually increases then decreases; proximal suckers largest.
- Length of cirri less than diameter of largest suckers.

Comments
This description is taken from Voss, 1982. More details of the description of O. bruuni can be found here.
O. bruuni shares (where males are known) enlarged suckers in both proximal and distal fields that are the same on all arms with O. agassizii, O. chathamensis, O. grimaldii and O. hardyi. It differs from all of these species in the number of suckers in the distal field (2-3 vs 6-14); however, the specimens are not mature.
Life History
The smallest know specimen is 13 mm in ML (drawing below). The enlarged suckers of the proximal field are present at this size. The enlarged suckers of the distal field, however, are not present until 18-23 mm ML.

Distribution
