Introduction

Ogyris amaryllis (?) male and female from a plate by G. F. Angas, 1847. This is apparently the original illustration representing the genotype of Ogyris.
Ogyris, a mainly Australian genus with one species endemic to New Guinea (O. meeki), is the sole representative of this subtribe. Larvae feed on mistletoes (Loranthaceae) and are tended by ants.
Nomenclature
The author of the generic name Ogyris has long been thought to be J. O. Westwood (1851), but the natural historian and watercolor artist G. W. Angas illustrated and identified it in the legend of Plate 37 of his South Australia Illustrated (1847). The type species is O. abrota Westwood, 1851.
