Lucillella Strand 1932

Lucilla Hewitson 1870 invalid junior homonym of Lucilla Gimmerthal, 1842 (Diptera)

Andrew V. Z. Brower
Containing group: Symmachiini

Introduction

A small genus of aposematically-colored, black butterflies with red or orange transverse forewing bands. This rare (or infrequently observed) genus is distributed in mid-elevation rainforest on the eastern slopes of the Andes in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Hall and Willmott (2010) suggest that L. suberra may belong in a separate genus, based on its divergent wing pattern and morphology. Hall and Wilmott hypothesize that species of Lucillella may be a Batesian mimic of Hades hecamede (Euselasiinae). Various Actinote spp., Arctiidae, Geometridae and Dioptinae are also potential candidates for this mimicry complex.

Nomenclature

Most species of this genus were originally described in Lucilla Hewitson 1870, which was subsequently discovered to be a junior homonym.

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
