Introduction

Etymology: Saint Procula or Claudia Procula was, according to Christian legend, the wife of Pontius Pilates. In the bible the book of Matthew mentions once, but does not name, Pilate's wife who advises him to 'have nothing to do with that just man', having been disturbed by a dream she had about Christ (Matthew Chapter 7, verse 19)(Procula).

Characteristics

Early stages:  Eggs cream coloured and approximately 0.8 x 0.8 mm (h x w). Females usually place eggs singly under older leaves of the host plant.  Mature larvae have a black body with yellow bands and stripes, with black scoli and black and white head; length is around 2 cm. Caterpillars are gregarious in small groups (Brown, 1981).

Geographical distribution

Eueides procula is distributed from Central America to the North Andes. The map below shows an approximate representation of the geographic distribution of this species. The original data used to draw these maps are derived from Brown (1979) which is available at Keith S. Brown Jr. (1979). Ecological Geography and Evolution in Neotropical Forests.

Habits

E. procula occurs from sea level to 2,000 m in forests near streams. Usually individuals fly rapidly in the canopy (Brown, 1981).

Hostplant: E. procula larvae feed primarily on plants from the genus Passiflora from the subgenus Granadilla section Quadrangulares, Digitales, and Laurifoliae (Brown, 1981). In Costa Rica E. p. vulgiformes larvae feed on Erblichia odorata (Turneraceae) (DeVries, 1997).

This page is a Tree of Life Leaf Page.

Each ToL leaf page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a leaf at the tip of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a leaf and a branch of the Tree of Life is that a leaf cannot generally be further subdivided into subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
