Lesquereusidae

Ralf Meisterfeld and Edward Mitchell
Containing group: Arcellinida

Introduction

This family contains genera which build shells of endogenous rod-like, nail-shaped or rectangular siliceous plates to which mineral particles may be added. Whether it is a monophyletic unit is questionable. Lesquereusia shows affinities in shell shape and cement structure with Lagenodifflugia, as does Netzelia with certain Difflugia spp. The rectangular shell plates of Quadrulella, Microquadrula and Pomoriella resemble those of the Paraquadrulidae, although the latter are from calcite and have an unstructured cement!

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
