Types

Holotype, Museum of Victoria, Melbourne J4527 (male); paratypes, Museum of Victoria, Melbourne J4528 (4 male, 1 female), J4529 (2 female), J4530 (1 female).

Type Locality

Victoria, Dobsons Ck, near Alpine Road Crossing, Dandenong Mountains east of Melbourne.

Range

Euastacus woiwuru inhabits streams in central Victoria from the Dandenong Mountains, east of Melbourne, north-east to Eildon and Dandongadale, east to Woods Point and Erica and south-east to the region of Thorpdale. Included in this range are tributaries of the Yarra, Murray, and Latrobe Rivers and some small coastal streams. The species usually occurs at altitudes above 200 m a.s.l., occasionally at lower elevations. Specimens have been collected at sites greater than 1,400 m a.s.l., snow covered in winter.

Habitat

Natural vegetation in the species' range includes mountain ash and tree ferns, with dry sclerophyll forest at lower altitudes. Much of the range is cleared and blackberry is common in areas. Euastacus woiwuru is most common where vegetation is dense.

Remarks

The species appears seperated from E. neodiversus by low country along the Morwell River.

This page is a Tree of Life Leaf Page.

Each ToL leaf page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a leaf at the tip of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a leaf and a branch of the Tree of Life is that a leaf cannot generally be further subdivided into subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
